Jnvercargill,'January T. • At a meeting of the" Bluff 'Wateriide '"Workers' Union, the following series of demands were approved for submission to a conference with the employers, to be held, shortly:— . Hours: From 8 a.m. to-5 p.m.; meal hour, 12 to 1; all other time overtime. Wages: For handling general cargo (ordinary), Is. 3d. per hour (overtime, 25.) i coal, Is. Sd. and 2s. Gd. For special work: Trimming, 2s. and-35.; carrying coal,; 2s. and 35.; repair work, Is. 3d. and 25.;, in freezing chambers, Is. Gd. and 25.. 6d,; on wharf, Is. 3d. and 25.; coal cham-bers,-Is. 3d. and 25.; guano and all manure iii bulk. Is. Gd. and 2s. 6d.; creasote, Is. Gd. and 2s. 6d.; nightwatchman, 10s. per night. The men aro. to be paid for half an hour when they work over 15 minutes, but' nothing for under that time. When men are ordered down to commence work [■between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., and arc not put- on, ono hour's pay at the overtime rate,| viz., 25., is to be given; between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., .two hours' overtime rate, 4s. Holidays are to be paid at the ordinary overtime rate. Tho men are not to be required to, work more than six hours without a meal. The place of engagement should bo on the wharf, in front of the Customs office. It is also demanded that the U.S.S. Company shall pay the wages weekly on Fridays, from 3 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., and other employers on Saturday, /from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Whilst engaged in' coaling work,, the carrying baskets, shall average 12J to the ton, "and large baskets 5 to the ton. The temperature of the meat chambers, whilst the men are working therein, shall not- be lower than 12 degrees above zero. Tho usual clauses for preference to unionists are inserted. It is sought that tho proposed award shall apply only to casual labourers employed from day to day and from hour'to hour, and shall not have reference to weekly or permanent employees. It shall apply to the'wharves and grain stores at tho Bluff.
