PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

At the inquest this morning on the remains of the late William Waugh, who met his death through a fall from his horse near his residence, between Ashhurst and Palmerston, on Friday morning, the medical 'evidence showed that deceased's skull was fractured, and a verdict of accidental death was returned.
Captain Haydon, senior Borough Councillor 'and chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, presided over a meeting of citizens at tho council chambers this morning, when -a presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made to Mr. F. J: Chisholm, chief clerk in tho Post and Telegraph Office, who has been transferred to Auckland. In making the presentation, Captain Haydon referred not only to the very capable manner in which Mr. Chisholm carried out his duties, but also to his tactfulness and courtesy. The staff of the Post and Telegraph Office lias also made valuable presentations to Mr. Chisholm, showing the very general esteem in irhicli ho is held. At ono o'clock this morning, a fire was discovered to bo raging in premises in I'itzherbert Street, occupied by Messrs. Schlagcr and Cavell, as a motor garage'. When the brigade arrived the firo had a secure hold, but the firemen succeeded in confining the conflagration to tho building -in which it started, \ and also saved a small boot shop—a part of the building—before very much damago was done to it. The whole of Schlager and Cavell's plant was destroyed. The shops, which bolong to Mr. H. Wollermau, are insured in the Atlas office for .£250. Schlagcr and Cavell's stock is insured in tho Liverpool, London, and Globe office for .£350. It was valued at'over .£IOOO, so that their loss is a one. Tho New Zealand Farmers' Dairy Union has paid out .£11,777 13s. for milk supplies for tho month of December. This is close upon ,£3OOO more than was paid out for the same- month of last year, notwithstanding that the rate of advanco is somewhat less than was paid for tho same month of the previous year, owing to tho reduced price being obtained for butter and cheese on the London market. A verdict of "suicide by drowning in the Manawatn River" was returned by tho Coroner at tho inquest on the remains of the late John Dickson, who threw himself into tho river with his foot and hands tied on Friday morning, near Moutoa. . The Palmerston Technical School Cadets, to tho number of sixty, held a most successful parade on Friday night, Captain Whalley and Lieutenant Ivells being in command.
