Yesterday, at 8 a.m., the New Zealand Shipping uo.'s steamer Otaki arrived * Lyttelton, and berthed at the King's Wharf to take in Homo cargo, before procosding to Napier and Auckland. From the latter port she leaves the Dominion for Home. At 10 a.m. on Saturday the Tyser Lins's steamer Star of Scotland left the stream for London. Sho was a full ship. Particulars of her Wellington cargo appeared in Saturday's i3sue. To-morrow afternoon tho New Zealand Shipping Co.'s R.M.S. Turakina should put. in an appearanco from London, via Capo Town and Hobart. Mr. G. 11. Scalcs's chartered steamer Clan Chisholm did not manage to clear Wellington for London on Saturday, as originally intended. She is to leave early this morning. KUMARA LEAVES ST. JOHN'S, N.B. Southern exchanges to state that tho New Zealand Shipping C-o.'s chartered steamer Ivumara sailed from St. Johns, N. 8., on December 20, for Australian and New Zealand main ports. She is due here about February 25. Tho Whakatane will also leave tho Canadian port for here on January 15, and will bo followed by tho fchxrterod steamer Invcrtay.- . Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that it has been decidcd. that tho steamer Kahu is to inaugurate the new. Welling-ton-Napier-Gisborne service this week, and riot the Ripple, as previously announced. Tho Kahu is scheduled to leave port at 3 p.m. to-morrow, and is receiving cargo to-day.
' The •Aparima. which is due in port today from Calcutta,, via Auckland, has 1220 tons of cargo to land hero before proceeding south. After having visited Lyttelton, tho F.S.H. Line's Sussex will proceed to Port' Chalmers, where she will be docked prior to . taking tho loading berth for Avonwouth. Wellington is to be her final port in the Dominion, and she leaves hero about the middle of March. An arrival in tho stream on Saturday at U a.m. was the scow Whangaroa, timber laden from Sydney. It ip expected that she will berth this moriir ins, and "upon completion of discharge the vessel will proceed to Karamca to load for Sydney. The ceow. Zingara is also to load for the New South Wales port, and arrived at Karamca on Friday last for that purpose. ; The Kotunui, tho now steamer recently built for tho New Zealand Shipping Co. for lightering work at Tokomaru Ray. went for a trial spin round tho Auckland harbour on Wednesday last. She averaged a shade under nine knot's an hour, which is considered very favourable, while her coal consumption was very r.mall. The repairs to the Fiji Government steamer Ranadi, now in the Auckland Graving Dock, are Hearing completion, and the voscJ will probably be floated out of dock to-day or to-morrow. The Lyttelton Harbour Board advises that Clauso 66 of the Harbours Amend-, ment Act, which came into force on January 1, provides:—"The third schedule of tho principal Act is hereby amended bv omitting tho words "For ships exceeding 500 touu, £3,' nnd substituting tho following, Tor ships exceeding SCO tone an addition of leu shillings for every 500 tons or part of 500 tons.'' Tho above refers to the fees chargeable for pilotage exemption ccrtUlcates. Arriving in port yesterday from Onehunga. and New Plymouth, the Corinna brought a torse shipment of dairy produce for transhipment to London by the Botorua, leaving here on Thursday next.

There wero two jaetsengcrs on board the great' German sailing ship Preussen when sho went ashore on tho first Sunday in November, near Dover. They were Dr. Budzica: and a marine painter named Fulm, both on their way to Valparaiso. The weather having moderated, the? were taken off during the day by ;t Dover galley. In the afternoon a lighter was towed to tho wreck, by the tug Lady V) . and. 18 of tho crew were taKen off and seat to tho Sailors' Home. It was expected that the remainder of tho crew would bo landed .that night, and tho ship handed over to tho salvage officials.
• There was a striking scene when Captain Nissen mustered the crew on d<wn and read them a telegram rent' by the German Einneror, and brought out.to the ship by a salvage steamer. In his telegram the Kaiser cxpreseed his regret at the loss of the Preussen, and added an expression of his hirrh appreciation and admiration of the gallantry showu by t.* crew.
