COURT WORK OF 1910.
CIVIL AND CRIMINAL, AT CHKISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph,—Press Association.! ' Christchuroti, January 5. The return of ( civil cases brought before the Supremo Court' at Christoliurch during 1910 shows there were 107 writs of summons issued. Seven wore brought under "extraordinary remedy" andsix wero disposed of by special case. The judge, sitting alone, heard 52 cases. Thcro were 41 findings for plaintiffs and 19 for defendants. The amounts for which judgments wero recorded totalled £10,180. In tho previous year the amounts of tho judgments . totalled £10,212. Tho divorce returns show that thcro wero 24 applications for dissolution of marriago, ono for judicial- separation, and two for nullity of marriago. Decrees wore granted in all cases. In 1909 there were 30 applications for dissolution of marriage, and the same number of decrees wero issued. The criminal return sets out that tho actual number of persons indicted for various offonces was 53—52 males and 1 female... There werp. 34 males convicted and sentenced. There were five assault aud robbery' eases in which there were three:convictions; inr i decent assault cases numbered 8, and 5 convictions-were recorded. Three persons wero convicted and sentenced for attempted rape, and threo cases of alleged carnal knowledge wero dismissed! 14; cases of alleged assaults on females wero heard, and 8 convictions resulted. Thirteen persons , wero 'charged with theft and 9 wero convict,ted. There were 2. males convicted of arson. Forgery and uttering was responsible for five cases, in which fow I 'convictions wero recalled. Thero were two convictions for breach of probation. ■Twenty-threo -males and - ono female were committed-for sentence under the Indictablo Offences ' Summary Jurisdiction Amendment Act, 1900. Tho return for 1909 shows that thcro wero 59 Ipersons —56 males and 3 females—indicted, of whom 35 males were convict-' led and sentenced. Court' show that" tho number of 'cases last year was 1944, tile number for !the previous year being 1943. Judgment ■summonses decreased from 3SI to 351, .'and orders made on them decreased cor'rcsnondingly from 177 to 145. Distress .warrants issued totalled 402, being 40 Jess than for tho previous year. * The Toturns of criminal business show that last-year 553 males and 5G females wero proceeded against for various offences, 101 being dismissed. Charges of drunkenness numbered . 809. Forty prohibition ordors wore issued, and 14 convictions for procuring liquor during the currency of- prohibition orders were recorded. Four Maoris wero proceeded against under tho Tohunga Suppression Act. t
