Tho criminal returns for the Wellington Magistrate's Court for ■ the year just closed show a considerable increase over those for the previous year, and the total is the highest for many years. The totals work out as follovr. Tho corresponding figures for 1909 are given in parentheses: —Persons taken info custody, summoned, or apprehended, 5137 males, 638 females (-IG7B and Ct2); discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence, 312 males, 38 females (371 and 32); dismissed on the merits, 173 males, 20 females (122 and 11); committed for trial or sentence, 150 males, 7 females (145 and 10); summarily convictcd, 4172 males, 5G7 females (1049 and 559); fined, 2120 males, 121 females (1925 and 135); imprisoned in lieu of fine or surety, 591 males, 101 females (572 and 90); peremptory imprisonment, 385 males, 74 females (375 and 84); whipped, 22 males (33 males) j bound over with or without sureties, 3 males (3 and 3j j orders made, 524 males, IG9 females (499 and'lß9); convicted . and discharged with caution, 824 males, 102 females (623 and 88).
