« ; (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) James Stewart Comicll pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and 10 a further charge of thelt of a rug valued at 155., the property of Murray Bell. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that tho rug was taken from a trap that had been drawn up 111 Manners Street, and by the time that it was missed, accused had sold it to a second-hand dealer for 2s. There were previous convictions for theft against Council, and ho was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, the rug to be returned to tho owner. On tho charge of drunkenness, nccusjd was convicted and discharged. Denis Downey and' Joseph I'helan, charged with drunkenness, were each sentenced to 11 days' imprisonment. James Monaghan, for a similar, offence, ■was convicted and discharged, and two first-offending inebriates wero treated in like manner. Another first offender, a seaman, was fined 205., with the option of JS hours, and ordered to be placed 011 board his vessel if sho sailed bsfors tho expirv of the default term. A fourth first offender, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit his bail ot 10s., or undergo JS hours' imprisonment.
