MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, January -i. Tho man White, who severed one of liis toes on Tuesday, and severely injured his foot, was a telegraph linesman. It appears that ho was engaged in chipping a telegraph pole, when his axe slipped and intl.ictcd the injuries named. His wounds were dressed bv Dr. Archer Hosking. The anticipated thunderstorm came on afternoon, and heavy rain fell for a time, nearly half an iuch being recorded. To-day it is again bright and clear, ami tho thermometer has reached 75 degrees in the shade. The town wears a quiet' aspect'since the holidays. Tho whole of the legal nud public offices are still closed,' and a. great number of residents continue holidnvmnking. " It is reported that an independent report js to he-obtained from an export on the oil deposits which exist on certain east coast properties. The . indications of the presence of oil in considerable quantities are very pronounced in some parts. The Auckland Central Mission Band has how almost concluded its mission in. the Wnirarapa. Eager inquiries are being made concerning tho probable period at which a start will he made with tho erection of the uew courthouse in Ma&terton. Nino tenders were originally received, but none of. these were accepted, as a variation in the plans was suggested by the Soroush' Council. The annual aquatic sports'in connection with the Mastprton Swimming Club arc to be held this month. Several rinks of Masterton bowlers are competing at tho North Island Bowling Tournament in Auckland this month. The Masterton Mounted Rifles, to the number of between 50 and GO, have gone into f camp at Castlepoint. Captain M'Killop is in charge.
