CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Invercargill January 2. The forty-third annual gathering of the Southland Caledonian Society was held to-day in tho most favourable weather conditions experienced for several years past. Tho. goto takings amounted to ,£220, an increase of .£GB on tho takings last year. As usual a special fcaturo of the games was the large entry in tho pipinu and dancing, events, but another notable feature was. tho very great interest taken in tho .quoiting matches. Twenty-eight players took part in the handicap match, and the games were continued until late in tho evening. A championship quoiting match, for which there arc sixteen entries, will be played to-day. Tho .cycling events were largely patronised, but the running events were confined for the most part to amateurs. The entry, for the'open events not being large, the events were, limited to four competitors all through; and competition was not keen. .
