SURF-BATHERS IN PERIL.
THREE FOOLISH YOUNG MEN. (By Telegraph.—Speoial Correspondent) Wanganui, January 3. Undeterred by previous fatalities, manj narrow escapes, and a notice-board pointing out the danger, many bathers" on the Castlecliffe Beach will persist in entering the water at a certain point on the., beach where there is little surf, but a treacherous undertow. l Three young men who were bathing at this spot on Sunday got into trouble, and were swept out towards the breakers. Fortunately a buoy was floated out to them, which sustained them, and a' number of others, by linking hands, formed a living chain, which finallv rescued them. They had a terrible time," however, fighting in the surf. The excitement on the beach during the rescua operations was intense. ■ . There is almost a total lack of lifesaving apparatus oii the beach, but as the outcome of the occurrence, and with a view to prevent a repetition, of previous accidents, a life-saving club is being formed, and an ajipeal made for funds to purchase apparatus. f .
