ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
— « ENGINE CRASHES INTO DRAY. THE OCCUPANTS KILLED. (By' Telegraph—Press Association.) Timaru, January 2. As the second express from'the, south approached Teinuku Station this evening, a horse and.dray,'with two men in it, was standing in the railway yard. The whistle of the-engine caused the horse to bolt.; It ran .across the line, in front of the train;'■ and the - engine struck the ■wheel and-smashed the dray to matchwood. It. also carried the • two men a ■short distance, and. killed and mangled both -frightfully.. Both were residents of Temuka. One, named John M'Aulaifc, was a labourer' and a widower, and leaves six or seven young children.' The oilier man, "William Snell, was a retired farmer, and. leaves a grown-up family. Both were old residents and highly respected; The Teinuka station-yard is admitted, to-be very dangerous. This is,the fifth fatality .in-connection with it,'and.efforts to.have a'public crowing made near tSe site, of. the„fatality will-be renewed., An inquest will be held to-morrow. DROWNING FATALITY. , . Wanganui, January 2. Rebecca Irvine, third daughter of Captain Irvine,..CastlccliiT, was drowned on, Sunday night. She s.p.d her sister and a yonng- man, when returning from church, went to,the breakwater. The sister and the young, man sat down at tl\e top' end of the breakwater, and the 'deceased, as she had done on. many occasions, intimated her intention of going to the extremity of the structure. AVhen the sister returned home the. house was in darkness, and it was only this morning that tho discovery, was made that deceased's bed had not been occupied. The body was : discovered on the beach a mile away. There was a bad bruise on the back of the.head, and evidently the deceased had slipped off the footway, and fallen.on .the rocks. . 'BLASTING. EXPLOSION. Xclejjraph.—Special OorrceiDondantj . > Masterton, January 2. A man named Timothy Teahan has been admitted to-tho'-Masterton Hospital from Mangapakeha. He was blasting a stump with dynamite when the ■ charge prematurely exploded, severely injuring his arms and the lower portion of. liis body. A BUSHMAN'S DEATH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.!' I nvercargitl, January 2. James Campbell,. aged 52, ■ a biishmaii residing at' Clifton, was ■' killed by being thrown from his horse at 6.30 p.m. .on Sunday, on the road near Woodcnd. Deceased, was married, and leaves eleven children. Greymouth, January 2. Bell, the'victim of tho recent trap accident on Friday, is recovering, slowly. ' FRACTURE OF THE SKULL. Opposite the Police Station in Manners Street last night a man was knocked down by a tramcar, and as a result was removed to tho hospital in an unconscious condition.. On examination. ho was found to.be suffering, from fracture of the base of the skull, and' his condition is' critical. The man's liamo is Denis Cronin.
