ON THE MOUNDS.
GARRISON ASSOCIATION. UPHILL CONDITIONS. The commencement of the third annual rille meeting of the Wellington Garrison Association at Trentham yesterday attracted a considerable number of shots of both senior and junior grades, but the competitors would have been still more numerous had the military tournament at I'almerston not attracted a proportion of keen volunteer, shots. Altogether there were 137 competitors, 54 rating as seniors, and 83 as juniors. As the entries did not conie up to the estimates on which the original, prize money was based, a reduction of twenty-five per cent was made in the prises, this being effected by cutting out some of the smaller money. The competitors entered into the snort' with enthusiasm, and even the changing light and the heavy rain which fell in tho morning did not lessen the keennessoosf s the competition. In addition to the two drawbacks mentioned above, an extremely baffling wind affected the "shoots" over . tho longer ranges. The snap shooting competition resulted in Lieuts. Butler and Hollard and Sergt. .Dodd each securing seven hits and two bull's-eyes. Sergt. Dodd was again at the top of the list in the 200 yards shoot, his ten shots all finding tho bull's-eye. Champion Geo. Halliday also secured the "possible" at this range. In tho junior events no fewer than five put or. 47. Again in • the 500 yards competition Sergt. Dodd showed the way with another "possible," his shooting up to this stage having been perfect. Lieut. Bolton and Rifleman E. .1. King both put on 47. Gunner A. Turner, and Corporal Reed, each with 46, headed the junior list at this' range. Tile shooting at GOO yards showed a falling off. President Marshall, of Karori, topped tho list with i-i on the senior side, and Lanee-Corporal Eves, of the Highland Rifles, put up a similar score amongst the juniors. The Licensed Victuallers' Cup for tho highest aggregate at tho 200, 500, and GOO yards ranges, which cup is held for twelve months, was won by Sergt. Dodd for the City Rifles, whoso figures were 50, 50, and 38, giving a total ol 138. President Marshall, Karori, scorcd 13G, and gained second honours, while Lieuts. Skolley and Bolton scored 131 each. These figures also represent tho first four men in tho aggregate for the day. Gunner Milroy, with 130, was leading for the •junior aggregate at the close of the day. An innovation at the meeting was the introduction of the new design of servico target, which was used at the 500 and 600 .yards ranges. This target, which has the same divisions as the ordinary secondclass target, is coloured blue on tho upper half, and green on the lower half, to represent a turf and a sky back-ground, tho central spot being a khaki head, and shoulders. As might be expected, opin-' ions differed considerably as to .the virtue of the new target, the view expressed by the .shoolist being generally dictated .by his score.
During the morning a sergeant belonging .to one of the squads accidentally fired his riflo off before \the actual competition firing began. The incautious competitor was made to pay the penalty demanded of thoso who offend against the, strict laws .of safety where so many rifle shots are gathered, together, the chief executive officer, Captain Jlarconrt, preventing' him from taking any part in the shooting during'the. day. Fortunately there, was no; serious result from tho shot, in question,' and a good deal of sympathy for the offender was expressed, but the executive are, however, to bo credited With tho firm stand taken. Captain Harcourt Turner, College Rifles, was in. charge of the meeting, and v.-as assisted by Captain, C'owles, adjutant of tho , Wellington Battalion, Captain Roach, Guards,' Captain ITarton, Post and '■.Ylegraph lliiles, Lieutenant: Williamson, Reserve of Officers, lieutenant Hutthin, "College Kifies, Lieutenant,"Keenan, Engineers, , and Lieutenant Hamilton, )Te-retaunga, ; Mounted,.
