ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SHOOTING ACCIDENT AT MAKARA. A' man named Patriok Ryan, a single man employed at Lambton Station, was admitted to the hospital at 9.15 p.m. on Saturday, suffering . from'. a gunshot wound in the foot. The injury was accidentally self-inflicted . at. Makara : at about six o'clock on Saturday evtning. Ryan was out after rabbits with a gun. Coming down a steep hillside his foot slipped on a loose stone, and he foil. In falling he; tried to throw his loaded gunrlear, but in the effort, somehow pulled' the trigger. The charge exploded, and Ryan was, shot in the foot. When he Was brought to the hospital one tee had to to amputated. He is expected soon to recover from the effects of his accident. A DANGEROUS PLAYTHING. A distressing case occurred at Fetons on Saturday, when the three-year-old daughter of Mr. Tasker, while playing with a pair of soissors, stabbed herself in the eye, inflioting a severe and exceedingly painful wound. The child was admitted to the hospital at a Into hour on Saturday erening. Yesterday Dr. Harty performed an operation, but it is feared that the little one may ultimately have to loss tha injured eye, i TRAGEDY AT DUNEDIN. '- ( . WOMAN BURNED TO "DEATH. (By Telejrrapli—Press Association.) . ' . Dunedin, January 1. A woman named Mary Ann Heath, aged 71 years,' and an old age pensioner, was burned to death about 2.20 this morning. Sho resided with her husband and two other women in a fnnr-roomed house in Dowling Street. When tho fire was discovered the husband is alleged to have been more or less under the influence of lincor, arid , apparently the inmates of tlio house had . been letting off fireworks earlier in tho night. ..The. oriipn of tho fire is a mystery. The house was partly destroyed,, and the brigade found, the woman's charred rem?.ins behind the bedroom door. The husbsad is suffering somewhat from shock, bnt not seriously. SUDDEN AND FATAL. . ' . —Christchur'ch, January '!. ; Jessie Thornton, residing ,at Sydenham, whilst out walking with her sister yesterday evening, complained of pains in the chest,' ami was taken to her home, ■where she expired. It is supposed tliat the cause of death was heart disease.
