Hodgkins) remarked to a Dosiimox reporter, that births- and, marriages/during. last year showed a steady , decline until tho winter was :past. -.The' improvement that then took place; was attributable; in his opinion,''to the increasing prosperity of the people. _ Statistics of births and marriages ■ -Especially marriages—were. one. of the best barometers ■of general prosperity or otherwise. There was a steady increase in;the marriages and births in Wellington" from tho beginning of 'tho century ontil ,1908, and the first real check catno with'■ >the; bad trade and hard times of , 1909. The improvement began about half-way-through 1910, and has since been insistently maintained.
