MR. LOGAN RETIRES.
DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SER7AN& Mr. J. K. Logan, 1.5.0., Superintendent of Electric Lines/ severed his connect' tion with the Public Service on Saturday. A career of 46 years iu connection with: tho telegraphic services of New Zealand closes with Mr. Logan's retirement • on superannuation. He entered the British, and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company's service at Paisley, Scotland, as a tad of twelve. That was. in IBSS. Ho left for New Zealand eight years later, having in tho _ interval been telegraphist . and officer in charge at various towns, ineluding Glasgow and Edinburgh. Shortly after arriving in Dunedin, he assisted in erecting the wires between that city and Christchurch, and on May 25, 1865, tha day _ communication opened with Invercargill and Cliristch-grch, he entered tho Dunedin office as assistant. Later in." the same year the Otago Provincial Government made him its inspector of -telegraphs. He erected and had charge of tho line through the goldfields to Queenstown, and when the General Government took over tho lines (December, 3869) ha was appointed Inspector of the Dunedim District. His final position of Suparin* tendent of Electric Lines, for. the whole}* of New ■ Zealand, dates from January 1, 1891. He received the Imperial Service Order in June, 1909, from the late King* as a recognition of his long and distinguished record in the Public Service, Mr. Logan, although ho has reached tha age limit, is still hale and vigorous. He carries with him into retirement- tho esteem and good wishes of tho officers of his Department, and a. large circle offriends.
