MAKING A CAPITAL.
AUSTRALIA'S PROGRAMME. The Federal Cabinet last, week approved of a programme of works to be carried out at the. Federal capital site, as submitted to it by the' Minister for Homo 'Affairs. Mr.-. O'Malley: stated subsequently that a start'would be made its early as possible in the new year, but he did not think that tho Department, would be able ,to spend the full .amount of £45,000 before' the end of the financial year- . The .'programme 'put the Cabinet was stated by the Minister to be as follows:— , ■ 1. To acquire a property known as Acton, of 1700 acres, lying outside the city area, and there to . erect offices and quarters for the staff of the Homo Affairs Department. Land not required for immediate use would bo leased at a t price that would more than cover the amount of the compensation. 2. The maintenance of all existing roads and - bridges arid the formation of such new roaijs . and deviations that might be necessary. ■ 3. To provide a power jilaat in units that would bo available for all purposes of water supply, brickworks, ctc. 4. To erect brickworks for the production of .'bricks to bo used in tho construction of the buildings in the city and elsewhere. 5. To establish a nursery for the propagation of trees and shrubs. , 6. To .erect gauges on the Molonglo, ■ Queanbeyan,. and Gudgenbv Rivers. ~ ■ 7. To reserve a suitable location on the acquired land for working men and their families, whicE would bo - provided with an unlimited water supply and perfect sanitation. 8. To erect cottages for the married - men on this location possessing the most modern conveniences. 9; To-provide suitable accommodation for single men, according to . civilised conditions. 10. A general store, including . a butchery, bakery, and. financial • • attachment, which should encourage thrift among tho employees,' to .be used for general purposes, .and act as a credit in- >/' strument' of exchange. 11. To provide and equip a hospital. 12. To erect and conduct a hotel. 13. To make suitable provision for the education of the children, to set apart sites for the purposes ,of religion; and to mako ample provision for recreation grounds.
