CARDINAL'S ULTIMATUM.
LABOUR AND THE CATHOLIC ■ VOTE.; . . "If the Labour Government persists m the same courso of 'injusticb'--to Koman Catholic schools 'as tho Wade. Government followed, they will certainly. bid good-bye to ~ their official, positions at the nest election." - This ultimatum was "presented as a Christmas-box to the' Labour pa'rtv . by , Cardinal.Moran at Sydney last'week: "We-arc waiting to see What Mr. Beeby's intentions are;" said his Emln-' eiiee. "'Tt istoo" soon'to" judgo'him'yeV but Catholics generally are watching his policy with a great deal ' of interest. .At the. late, elections the most momentous struggle was that , at the Glebe, whero Mr. Hoguo lost his scat. Mr. , Hogue had set Catholics .in the /matter of education at defiance, and the Ministry put'all its ■ strength" there to have him clected " to Parliament. • Even Catholics friendly with the Government went there to assist him, but he was put but on the one point—that of education. "Wo had no connection whatever with tho Labour party, but that leaves lis more free. Wo are determined to assert our rights, although wo are a minority. But a minority hss its rights. '.It is perhaps a distinctive feature of : all British legislation in the Home countries that it respects the rights of minorities. We are .now strong enough to assert- our rights. .The only battle we fight, is at the polls, and we" are' determined to fight'it out there." '
