NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Bt Glencoe.l - . The results of tho Auckland Racing Club meeting for tlio first two days have, been simply wonderful 1 , from a layer's point of view,-and very ,-few favourites, have won. Yesterday -a rank outsider—. Flying Soult,- .who was never noticed, iir his first daj-:s engagement—won -the opening event, and paid.a very big dividend. In the hurdles, lioanga deicatcd two well-, backed ones,in.l^opheJifandoCon^tiniij^ce... The' Ellersliertrained hurdler -has recently: returned from. an unsuccessful trip to Australia, and he is,' evidently improving with racings On Monday he. was as gocd as Tauira half-woymp-ihe straight, but tho latter stayed on-best. Tho lesser distance in- ; race would be all in favour of the. winner. It would seem as if a wrong policy is beins adopted with Prophet, w-hd 'was • Inst week undergoing •a Cup preparation, but yesterday was saddled up in the Hurdle Kaco with 12st. Gib. on his back. Horses very rarely "mix it" with any success, and Prophet will probably prove no exception to' the rule. Theodore was not prominent in the Railway Handicap on Monday, but yesterday Mr. E. J..-Watt's'horse':defeated Salute, Dearest,., and several other good ones. Salute, yesterday's; runner "P, was . heavily'supported.on both days, by her owner, .Jlr. F. Ross, but in each case the weight was just a.little too much. "Tho' success of King Soult in the Summer Cup will' cause the Auckland colt to harden in tho market for the Great Northern Derby. Surprise was, expressed when it was found that Danube had been withdrawn, and evidently Trainer R. J. Mason is reserving him' specially for the big classit event. The Summer Clip would have been a good gallop for him, and one would havo expected him to be all the better for a race which would sharpen him up. However, Mason apparently thinks otherwise. Tho little Soult 3-year-old filly Antoinette was favourite in the. opening event on Monday, but she must have'been in need of a race, as yesterday she won from tho inconsistent Sharpshooter. The latter is a most unreliable animal. Ono day he puts up'an Australasian record, and the next day ho is beaten by a field of moderates. Like all the Clnnrahalds, he is somewhat soft, and requires a clear passage, and no interference in. his races. The Waitemata Handicap was won by Maxwell, full brother to Soultline, who is highly spoken of in the north, and Monday's. form worked out well in the concluding ovont, which went to the Gisborue-owncd Dazzling. . The last-named (half brother to California) has been a disappointment for a long time, but now he seems to quite at his best again.' At the Fairlie races on' Tuesday Red White and Blue (own sister to the Wellington Cup winner, Blue Ribbon) won tho Trial Plate and the Fairlie Cup; The principal attraction for local racegoers on Monday and Tuesday next will be the Wairarapa Racing Club's summer meeting, which is to be held on. the club's course at Tauherinikau. A number of visiting horses have, already reached tho scene of action, and tho indications aro that the fixture will be a very successful one. On Monday and Tuesday, January 2 and 3, the Wairarapa Racing Club will hold its summer meeting on.the Tauherinikau racecourse, Featherston. Special train arrangements aro advertised in this issue. ■ In connection with the Nelson Trotting Club's annual meeting, to to held on Wednesday, January 8, 1911, nominations close for all events at. tho secretary's office, piercer's Rooms, Trafalgar Square, Nelson, on January 4.
