SOCIALISM IN THE UNITED STATES.
A GREAT GAIN IN VOTES.
One of the most remarkable features of the rccent. elections^in America (says the "Manchester Guardian"), was the unexpected strength of the Socialist vote throughout tTic Union, and now that time has been given for the analysis of this vote, some striking figures and facts may bo quoted. . Although the Socialists . succeeded in electing onlv one Congressman, the siriKiii£ fact about his election is that it occurred in Wisconsin, a' State which is strongly Bonublicnn. The total' Socialist vote was over 1,250.000, frnereas two years n«;o this vote, was less than 500.000. The biggest increase was showily in Minnesota, where from 11,000 in 1908 the Socialist vote this year leaned up to 97,000. The township of Reading (Pennsylvania) was carried bv the Socialists, and in New Yorl; aiul Ohio they made immense Rains, ilr. Victor Berger, the Socialist .Congressman elected from Milwaukee, declares that at the nest Congressional election members of the party will be elected from every Northern State..
