GAS DISPLACING ELECTRIC LIGHT.

When Parliament reassembles, says tho "Weekly Scotsman" of October 22, members will find that a great improvement has' been effected in the lighting of the thoroughfares bounding tho Palace of St. Stephen's, Bridge Street, Parliament Square, St. Margaret's Street, and Westminster Abbey. High-pressure gas, which is'a brilliant illuminant, .with improved burners und incandescent' mantles, have superseded electric and ordinary gas light-' ing. New steel gas mains have been laid from Victoria Street to conncct them with those now in Parliament Street and Whitehall. High-pressure gas lighting has been introduced into the maiii artery of ICnightsbridgo for the Kensington Borough Council, and now-Victoria' Street has been illuminated by the improved gas. Tho light is well diffused through specially hardened glass hemispherical globes, and it is claimed to be superior to electrical power in penetrating fog. In a few weeks tho company' will have completed their contract, with the Westminster Council for lighting all tho leading roadways' in tlie'city, which was obtained in competition with clectric light companies. The price of gas was found to be from 20 to 50 per cent, cheaper than electricity.
