(From Our Special Correspondents Masterton, December 29. Bnilding permits of the value of XIO,GOO have been issued in Masterton since the commencement of the present year. This dbes not include a number of buildings which hftvo been erected in the suburbs. The coming,year promises to see .greater 'animation-in-building than in the past. A sum of Jill,ooo is to-be expended upon Government buildings alone. - Heavy rain Eet in at an early hour this .morning, and at the time of writing shows every indication of continuing. Tho rain will have an appreciable effect upon grass and vegetation, which were languishing, though it .will mean a temporary 'cessation' of harvesting operations. Madame Dolores has ■ booked tho Mas- , terton Town Hall for a concert m April •next. , The.Auckland Central Mission Band,, which is conducting a mission in tho Masterton and Wairarapa districts under tho allspices of the No-License League, gavo an entertainment in the Masterton Town Hall last evening to a fair audience. In an interval in tho programme, Mr. E. A. Wright, 11.8., of Wellington, gave an. address in explanation of the new amendments of tho licensing Act. Mr. Wright mentioned that the abolition of barmaids and the locker system, the raising of tho age limit to twenty-one, tho ; abolition of bottle and wholesale licenses, and the introduction of tho Dominion issuo j were distinct gains to the .No-License party. He urged upon.the people of Mas-1 terton to assist outside'districts by voting Dominion No-License. The following team, has been selected to represent Wairarapa in a cricliet match against Nelson on January 3 and -1 Moorhouse, Redmond, M'Kellar, Waters, Logan, Congdon, Smart, Beechey, Waligli, T. Hoar, and Esson. , Tho riews of the success of members of the Opaki Rifle Club at tho Wnnganui meeting was received with much satisfaction here. The Opaki Club was probably never stronger than it is at present.
