i IMMIGRANTS BY-THE lONIC. . The lonic, which arrived from London ..yesterday'brought,in a 11.583 passengers. Of .these 151; were, booked to- Wellington. • Ihe steamer brought 148 assisted immigrants till) adults and 29 children).. Forty-: five adults and; 27 children were nominated by relatives in New Zealand, and 74 adults and five children were approved by the High Commissioner. • .The- last-men-.tioiied' immigrants; are possessed of capital totalling: .£8535.. ■: Among !■ the' new arrivals' : are ,IG-;farmers • and 16'-farm-la-' -..tourer's, 38 domestics, eight cooks, three dairymaids,. oneV shepherd, and 19 wives rejoining their- husbands. • The lonic also had aboard .a number lof miners, carpenters, and, fitters. Of .'the domestics the' majority came out under engagement, although, ;a.'number were still Open for engagement when they;: arrived. Mr. A. .S. Danby,.immigration officer, told a re-porter-tnat the lonic immigrants seemed to; him a very capable and' reliable class of men - and women. This opinion, Mr. Danby mentioned, was shared by the ship's doctor..of the lonic, a gentleman who had had a lengthy experience on ships conveying immigrants to ■ Canada.. llr. Danby; is confident that the lonie immigrants will! easily ■ establish themselves in'; New Zealand and. be a fwelcome accession, to our population. . Mariy ofr.the lonic, passengers destined. Ifpr northern ports; who did not travel iby the Monowai, left by Main Trunk express, yesterday. Passengers for New. will be leaving to-day and those for Westport on. Saturday.. A majority of. the new arrivals, left Wellington yesterday. - ' ■One'man-who arrived in the lonic will he sent back by the Tainui,' as. he was ieund on arrival to be suffering from chest trouble. A third-class passenger, Mr. W. Paton, died of consumption on Decern.ber 22, and was buried at inear Hobart. The only other instance' of sickness aboard was that of a child, which was ..found .to have contracted scarlet fever soon , after- the., ship., had left Teneriffo. : Precautions adopted proved effectual, and i the disease did not spread.
