COST OF LIVING IN ROME.
HOMELESS CITIZENS. The cost of living presents problems which are becoming every daj 7 more urgent and insoluble to the poor of Rome. The other day the Syndic, had a long conference, with the Italian Premier, Signor Luzzatti, to discuss meaus for housing some hundreds of unfortunate men and women who have no other refuge at night than porticos and doorways in the streets. This is not the first time that the SyndiQ has meditated action of sodio kind, but so far nothing has been done. The Pope has been so impressed by the difficulties of life in Rome that recently lie raised all the salaries of the various employees'of the Vatican by 25 per cent. That, of course, is a step which, though possible in the Vatican, with a limited number of dependents, cannot bo taken, elsewhere, iluch of the evil is. artificial and might be remedieel, as far as the price of food is concerned, by. some legislative action. The price of meat, dairy produce,. fruit, and vegetables is said to bo purely- artificial and : duo to combination among the producers I and principal vendors. Tho smaller the demands, sometimes, the higher are the prices to make up for the . loss in the quantity, sold.
