It is expected that she will reach Avonmouth on February 17/ FKOM SAIL TO STEAM. CAPTAIN'S DISCOVERY. A well-known shipmaster who, after more than 20 years' command in sail, wa3 appointed some iittlo time ago to tlie command of a large new steamer, writes to an English exchange r.s follows:— "I guess my change did surprise you, and a good many others also. lieally J could not stand the offlceri and crcw3 Iwe were, getting in . gail.< Tho officers. ! were two extremes—ft boy for second mate I and a man any age .from 60 to 70 for mate.. I Then there was the trouble with uuI reliable crews. If we got three or four ! decent sailor men in a ship's forecastle I company of 19 1 was fortunate. Anyhow, it sot on my nerves. I was not. able to | carry canvas, as I knew when I wanted lit in I.had not. the men who. knew i enough to do x it. I made up my mind to 1 try steam. I can assure you I now regret not having done so 25 years ago. There is no comparison between the two lives. The constant -anxiety about w!nd, spars, and sails, and the make of a. pas-sage, is absent in steam. Of course, there are other worries in steam, but not to equal those under sail." ' In commenting on tho above, the Sydney Daily Commercial News and Shipping List" snvs that/ the assertions arc undoubtedly strong, but at the present time appear warranted. .
