' " NOTES ON THE RACING. ' (Dy Telegraph—Special Reporter.). -Palmerston North,:December-28. Glorious weather prevailed for: the annual meeting of the-Ashhurst-Pohangiua Racing. Club, and. there was an attendance quite iip to the averago of former Fears. There wero .wholesalo scratchings luring the day, duo to the fact that many Jorses . had gone sore, as tho result of their efforts on the hard going at Awa?urii. The-Guineas was the principal ;vent, and'tho race was generally termed ■ 1 moral certainty for Rill, who had •scored in a similar- event at Carterton, and had also shown winning form at Awapuni. Contrary .to expectation, it proved: to be quite an. interesting race, Rill and Waikehua being locked together over the last six fjirlongs, and the favour-' ite only scoring.by a neck, with Florence Nightingale never .'in it. There was a great diversity'of opinion as to how much the winner had in hand, and both riders held different opinions.. After the race the winner was decorated with the blue i ribbon by Mr. D. M'Carthy) president of 'the club, and'cheers wore given for tho horse, owner, and rider. in, the. Trial Hurdle's, All Trumps was made a, slightly better favourite than Winchester, a rather useful-looking sort by St. Crispin, and bred in the TaTrtanga district. The latter's rider anticipated .the barrier, and got a two lengths' break b-'t.at the first fence he■ was joined by .Whitestonc, and the pair raced into tho straight together. At tho second fence Lorraine, .ran down-.- the obstacle, and brought All Trumps down with him it tho six furlong post Whitestone fell, 'and this left Winchester, with a substantial lead, and he won by'a good fifty yards. Dorando. and Maori ltiflo were the only others to finish. ; MoreykofT, with his owner in the saddle was made favourito in the Flyin" Hack Handicap, but though lie began smartly he.was .never; a winner,,and Bracken won very easily from Magneto. The price paid by tho winner was a false one, considering the good form shown by' him »t Awapuni.

Vi was made a strong order in the Cup, in which she whs ridden, by F. Cress, who, it was argued, would 'hold her together better than the youngster ■who did duty at Awapuni. The result ivas never in doubt, for the mare was not headed. •'Merry Frank was" her nearest attenuant in the first mile, in Which Ooodinn Park was tailed oIF, bni: the latter came with-an irresistible lush, and, had he been better placed in the earlier stages, it looked as if he must have greatly troubled the winner. Sandstream .was close up fourth. , There were seven runners in the Komako welter, 'Bracken, who was making his second appearance, being made an odds -on favonri' e. He began very smartly, but Miss Sylvia joined him, and made the pace very fast, which had the ofl'ecl: of carrying, the big Blenheim horse" oIT his lips. Tht field was bunched entering the straight, and then The Rover asserted himself, and looked to have the race j <aon, but M'Lean brought Quceu of Scots!

along, with an irresistible rush, ami scored cleverly by u length. The favourite finished last. St. Bill was a . hot favourite in the Pohangina Hnndicap, and for the second time in Mieciission lie was beaten, this time it was by the jightly-weighted Moreo, who wus splendidly handled by M'Lenii. This youngster is riding splendidly at' the present time, and promises to make a name for himself. Puketotara was quickest to begin in the Jlaiden Hack Handicap, and tins Foxtontraincd animal led into the straight, and coming on, won easily by two lengths. Ariom, with A. Oliver in the saddle, wns first to break the line in the filial race of the day, and the Mcrriwee maro led all the way, and won by a length from Toanga, with Captain "Bell close up.
