During the cruise of. the, London Missionary Society's mission steamer John Williams'- among : the islands, the wireless ' apparatus installed last trip under the direction of Mr.' J. Pike, t|ie young wireless expert, of .Sydney,' ivds brought into use with highly successful results. It', so happened, that Mr. Pike was the wireless operator on .the Ii.M.S. Maktira on her last trip across the Pacific when the John Williams. was cruising among the islands. . The John Williams -has a receiving apparatus only, but when at Samoa messages ' were , passed by Jlr. Pilto to the mission vessel, and for five days Captain Steele was in toiich with Mr. Pike for a distance; -of • 1750 miles. Later on in the cruise, while" at Papua, Captain Steele heard messages passing from .the cruisers of the 'stiuadron . in Australian waters. . At'the" Petoue Court yesterday morning,' before Mr. It. W; Short,', J.P., George A. Toggi for insobriety, was fined 10s.. in default 21 hours', imprisonment.
