The Governor of Mozambique, Bortuguese East Africa, proposes that the Government officials who rccruit,natives for labour on tho Rand should: enforce repatriation. He fears that if this is 'not done, the country will be .depopulated. - During August of this year 23,894 white men and 185,407 coloured men were employed in the gold mines, on the Band. Under ordinary conditions the supply of black'labour is. hardly adequate to the demand. The recent extension of recruiting to Central* Africa-has'been estimated as likely to add another-million or so to the seven millions of blacks in South Africa from whom unskilled labour can bs drawn. The native's* are Estimated' to spend at present about half of their time between the ages of 20 and 40 at work.
