Hβ • .-, had been arrested while begging in Fitz- v ■ herbert Terrace, : and the. evidence was '~ much against him. ..A sentence of three months' inipTisonment'was'imposed. ' . James Thomas Stevenson pleaded guilty to theft, on December 25, of a; pipe valued .' at 65., the.property of Kobert'lieid Millar. :\ SuMiispector Norwood stated that.in the '■'. early hours of Christmas morning, Steven.-" son had been taken to the polico station.. to explain. his reasons lor being in the. street at that hour. He liatl-il3.in.hie--- " possession, and gave a'satisfactory account of himselr. After he left the station tho . pipe belonging to a constable, was-missing, . and oil Monday accused was seen smoking, this pipe on tne wharf. Speaking on his own behalf, accused stateu that he had ■:'. never been before a court before. Hβ came to Wellington from the country to . go Home by the Drayton Grange, and though the pipe was found'in his possession, he was unable to account for it .. As he was very much upset at being taken, to the station on suspicion ho considered: ■■■ •ho must have picked it up in a fit of absent'mindednes. He was willing to ._ ■ make- good its .value.
