Several records went by the board in connection, with the A.R.C. summer meeting, which opened to-day—there was a re-' cord attendance and a record totalisator turnover,, in fact'it.was nothing but records tho whole day, and the' regrettable accident in' tho Cup robbed tho race of much interest, as the three favourites all fell. -There. was a ; very large crowd present when the-horses went out .for the first race. Antoinette' and Miss Mischief wero tho public fancies, and both showed up well, but had no chan6e with Tattoo, who was in command tho whole way. . Domino also put up a very smart i performance, and .will be heard of. lieforo the meeting.finishes.' It was the general opinion that Sharpshooter had run third, but tho judge placed Antoinette in that* position. M. Ryan, who rode tho winner, was making his first appearance sinco his accident, and was loudly cLeercd on returning to scale., '•■; The looked-for- meeting between Culprit and Miss Winsomo in the Great Northern Foal-Stakes did not eventuate as the latter was suffering from influenza, and had to be.withdrawn. - Contrary to expectations, Miscount was better backed than Culprit and Peirflne, but Messrs. Stead's filly.won from the fall of the flag. Miscount was restless, and lost about three lengths at the barrier. The Charlemagne filly won by about two lengths, with Miscount three . lengths away. The other pair n;ere a long way back. g Although there were seventeen runners in the Robinson Handicap, the public picked it quite easily. A heavy run.set in on Soultoria as soon as , proceedings opened,-.'-and she touched a. very- short price..'Deeley was-in the saddle,, and landed-his mount a' comfortable winner by.-atcouple of lengths, irom an outsider in Mary. Ann. The winner is not much-to look at, .but; like all-the Soults, she can gallop. Those behind, her were a. very moderate lot, if Cullinan, who' was not seen at his best, is excepted., 7 The defection of Diabolo and Advocate from the Cup field left • eleven : runners. The race was termed a jumper's flat handicap .owing to the presence of several first-class hurdlers and the absence of aijy high-class. flat .performers. Diabolo was reported to .be in a very bad way to-day, and is unlikely to, race for some considerable time. Bridge' was sore,, and, in addition, had a big, weight up: Kopu was started,. but it was generally admitted that lie could not be at his best. From a good start Maiiapouri led from Kopu, with Sir Prize acting as wbipper.' Going down tlio hill from, the five-furlong_ post Kopu and Bridge .collided and both cam© down,- while' Paisano tumbled over the sprawling horses. This left the pony Manapouri with a big lead, and he was not caught till this 'snot' in the next round..-When;John headed him, the Istter looked.-like winning, but ho tired badly,' and before ,Waimangu could pass hiin' he had to run over to the , outside rails. John was fourth, and Sedition fifth,- -while Dunborvc and Sir Prizo had: been 'tailed off the' whole waj-. .'Sedition'was interfered with when tho, accident occurred, or ho may have run .better. An inquiry was held into the cause of' the fall, and it was decided to adjourn" till Thursday.. O'Brien had his collarbone broken,' but'the other .boys wcro. uninjured, . , Continuance was. made a better favourite than Tauira in the Grafton Hurdies, but tho Gisborue horse -was never "prominent; at any stage. • Tauira. : gave a great exhibition of jumping, and, seemed to be suited'by the reverse way round. He took the.lead .a mile from homo, and ■although challenged several times ho always outiumped the others and won by a couple of,lengths. Twelve runners-faced Mr. O'Connor in tho Railway; Handicap, the -.defections being Tamainupo. Tenterhook, Tanekaha; and TTrukehu.. There was a long delay at the barrier, but when the tapes went up the.start'was an even one. Hohunga,'talii quickly established'a lead, and was ; not -caught. At the turn Salute was his Nearest attendant, but. she faded away [under her big;.weight, and Kakama ran .into secbiid , place, but could make no impression'on the leader/who won! comfortably,'with' his stable-mate, Wauehope, in third place. . Heavy 'plunging was indulged in on Orton -in-the 'Nursery Handicap, and ho woni'froni tho barrier, rise. Mr. Greengelding has improved considerably, although'the';field, opposed to him to-day contained7iiothing of any note. The, Forir.u'a.mare, Lady Medallist, was made the-biggest favourite of the day in the Christmas.'Handicap; in which she Went down tsbefpre' the lightly-weighted Dazzling. 'The 'latter horse, who is in'tho same stable as Goldfinder, .won cleverly. 'MANAWATU R.C. MEETING. SECOND DAY'S RACING. MERRIVONIA AVINS THE CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
