PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special.Correspondent.) Palmerston, December 23. There is a large, inilux of visitors to Palmerston, tho races and the proximity of Christinas attracting great numbers. Yesterday—tho weekly stock sale day—was particularly busy, there being large Crowds of country people in town. Early in. tho, morning . a nor'-.westerly, gale sprang up, and there were some very heavy showers of rain, .which made . things particularly uncomfortable, es- - pecially for ladies and children. Busi- >_ liess appears to be very brisk, aiid tradespeople state that the volume or trade is very satisfactory. The: three large public State schools '; broke up yesterday for the Christmas .. holidays. In the morning at the Collects - Street School, a number of-.'prizes were:'. given for merit and certificate cards for attendance. Mr. T. 11. Hoddcr, chair- '■"•■' inan of the committee, addressed, the children, and the gathering broke up; \ ; with cheors for the teachers and oth- ' c-rs. In the evening the Terrace hnd - School held its annual concert, aiid prizes were distributed by the Mayoress . (Mrs. Nash). To-night the Campbell; ; Street School held tTieir annual "'tunc-. .■ • tion, a good programme bv the children . being, of course, the feature. ' ■ Tho Palmerston Bowling Club will be represented by three rinks r.t the'Auck-: ' , '- . land .'tournament, the skips being '.T; Griggs, C. Pickering, and J. A.
