PATEA STRIKE.
(By. Tciezraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, December 23. The wharf ■ labourers at Patea still romaiir oil strike, efforts ot' a settle-ment-having, so far, proved fruitless. 'There dro four employers concerned— tlio Railway Department, .. .the- Patca ' Harbour . Board, the Aorere Shipping Company, and the Patea Shipping Comipany. At a conference held between the- men and tlio employers, the demands of the former were readily acceded to hy three out of four ,of tlio .employing parties, but the Paljea Shipping Company maintained their original .attitude, and, consequently; matters .remain unchanged. The men aro willing •'to concede the Saturday half-holiday demand, but aro firm on tlio preference 1 to unionists question, and in their demand for Is. Gd'. per hour and 2s. 6d. per hour ov'ertimo. This is tlio samo ( rato as is paid in Wangamii.- .Those familiar with tho-trouble predict-that ■it will bo setttled within a tew days.
