"WELLINGTON'S ZOO."

• -rO - Although the City. Council) is not spending':-any money-in purc&f£ing''animals for the "Zoo" just now, owing to the adoption of a policy of strict economy, until the end of. the municipal financial , year,, yet the young institution is prospering, and visitors to tho city during tho holidays will see much to interest them at Newtown Park. Tho Wellington Zoological Society has add.cd to-, its gift., of-kiwis, weaver birds .and whyda.ho,, a. flue, young kangaroo, -while- other 'donors' have presented a bridled wallaby and two crcsted penguins. -There 'has also been' placocl in the. "Zoo"--a beautiful squirrel," which is located-next to the Australian opossums, forming an interesting contrast— the opossums curled up in their hoses, scorning always to be, asleep, while tho squirrel seems never to tiro or rest.. The collection of'-Variegated mice are now exhibited in a skilfully-constructcd .box, which permits of'their bettor inspection. Other interesting additions to. the "Zoo" are two young thar goats, three young marmosets, and two cockateels, all of which havo recently been born in the establishment. Hats-and a weasel of stoat are at present 1 causing great trouble, and have destroyed some young waterfowl, but Mr. Langridge, with his vermin-proof contrivances, is rearing a considerable number of. pheasants.
