RELIGION IN SCHOOLS.
Sir,—Referring to the meeting in the Masonic Hall, v.'liat are w6 to think of such men as J. Gammell and Professor Mackenzie? For many years the general taxpayers havo been called upon to pay the railway fares of children whose parents are 'instructed by their Church to removo them from district schools. Twelve to twenty-four miles single journey are commonly travelled under in&ruction. If a return fare is ordinarily 2s. .for children,' and many school children'aro fifteen, will the. professor tell us what is the' approximate cost to the general taxpayer ? I know it is customary to say how : many teachers under education boards"are not required, and salaries saved, as a result of . this ceclesiasticism, ,but can tho professor tell'-iis;-whon writing, the number of schools, well built and well furnished, with: reduced forms and staffs as a further result?' Those acquainted with-the Now South "Wales system .loiow quite well that ecclcsiasticism in schools is no bugbear.—l am, etc., FAIRPLAY.
