A CROP RETURN.

EFFECT OF THE DRY SEASON.

A return giving an estimate-of the area under certain crops on October 20, 1010, appears in last night's Gazette. It is as under; —

. The area of oats grown for chaffing is (it is stated) .probably larger than for the preceding two seasons, the Marlborough production, being estimated at 7000 to 8000 acres. A considerable quantity; in localities -affected.- by. insufficient rain,' intended t°r- threshing has<been used 1 for chaff. The- areas.. of ■ turnips ■ and rape have been increased in, sonio districts since the returns, wero collected by crops of these .plants being sown on land which had been - occupied .-by cereal .crops fed off or.harT®' id; early owing to dry weather. -, The .dry season in the principal grain-. growing districts had the effect of checking the development of the crops to such an extent.that some were - fed off by jbek, and some ripened prematurely and, were cut for chaff. Th cockfoot and.ryegrass seed' crops have also been greatly diuimshed .by the same cause. The-rains "since the middle of November caused a great improvement in tho remaining crops and the pastures.
