Charts, ctc.. a ffccted: Admiralty Charts No*. 1212 and 2525; "New Zealand Pilot," eighth edition, 1908, Chap, iii., page 48. TAVIUNI, FROM NEWCASTLE.. Leaving Newcastle at 4 p.m. on Friday last, the Union Company's Taviuni arrived nt Wellington at 8.40 a.m. yesterday. A report of the voyage states tltat it was an uneventful one, and was forwarded with fair weather. The*Mocraki was sighted at 1.15 p.m. on Monday last. The Taviuni brings 11C0 tons of coal, and about a ten of timber for Wellington. Upon completion of discharge she lays up here until after the holidays. As stated previously, Captain .Maw&on took charge of the vessel at Sydney owing to Captain Kennedy having to' go ashore on sick leave. " ! N-.Z.5.. CO.'S MOVEMENTS. Having left Bluff at 6 a.m. yesterday for Wellington, the Otaki is due iii portrthis evening. Sho will berth at the King's Wharf, and commence Homeward loading on . Saturday morning. Her other ports are Timaru, Lytteltou; Napier,' and Auckland, leaving the latter port on January 12.' The Opawa-was to have left Waitara yea- , terday for Picton.; She proceeds tlienco . to Wanganui. and Wellington, being due , here on Thursday next. Loading operations will bo carried on until January 10, when the vessel leaves for London. WOOD VERSUS IRON. . A STRONG ARGUMENT. ' The overhauling of the oy3ter dredging : craft at the Bluff, in view of the re-open-ing of the season iii a little over a month's time, has brought to light interesting evi- ' denoe of the superior durabiiitv of wood over iron for the construction of certain : classes;of ship 3. - .A. prominent example i is that of the steamer Despatch, which j was built of wood thirty-five years ago. An inspection of the timber plankins of her hull proved the. wood to be as sound 1 as it was on the day . she was built. The J timber utilised was the well-knmm Australian hardwood. It is a well-established ( fact that many iron hulls at the ago of j thirty-five years would be fit. only for i the scrap heap, and. the case of the « Despatch is a strong argument in favour of the old-fashioned but none the less serviceable wooden hulls; j ■ SUSSEX, PKOIL LIVERPOOL. ■ j Looking none the worse for her collision with the Newstead, while entering Las i Palmas on October 22, 'save for a big dent 1 in the bows, well abovo the water-line, which gives the vessel the appearance of . a warship, the F.-H.-S., linor Sussex ar- \ rivod at Wellington yesterday from Liver- ] pool, : via way ports. Leaving the Home | ' port on October 15, the vessel experienced fine weather on the run down to tiua c Palmas, which was. reached on Octobcr' 1 22. After a stay of five days, while re- i pairs were effected, the vessel left again, p on October 27 for Cape Town. For tne. r first part of- the voyage line weather was experienced, practically no N.E. trades. . being met with. When at ldeg. S. the 5.15. trades wero encountered, and these increased •in strength to a moderate gale until 28dcg. S. wa« reached. From here to Cape . Town, which was reached on November 15, a moderate gale, with high head seas, was encountered. The South African f port was left on the following day, and fine to modorato winds and r-eas lasted until thrco days west of Cape Leeuv/in. Horo strong, westerly gales were encountered, ihe vessel labouring ' heavily. When the weather was at i*a worst, the vessel lost a v blade off lier propoller. Sydney was reached on December 12, and the vest/el commenced the final stage of her 'voyage on December 16. On the run across the Tasman S£a N.W. gales were experienced, uutil tho'Now Zealand coast was sighted. Ai:chor was tapped in the stream at 4.20 yesterday, the Sussex berthing at Tarnwutj Street Wharf, at 9.30 a.m. Captain 11. W..Robert-son «is in command, and. has with him the following officers: —Chief, Mr. K, Grant; second, Mr. A. Macrae; third, Mr. F. J. Powell; fourth, Mr. Geo. Watson. Mr. H. Griffiths of the cMgine-room. and Mr. A. Taylor ft sccoud; Mr. F. P. Penrse, auxiliary eecond; Mr. J. M'Donald. third; Mr. W. Smith, .fnMi'th: Mr..R..Beleradc.is.chief .ncfriircrat-
mg engineer, and Mr;. W. 0. Griffiths is j-ccond. The chief steward is Me. H. Car-t-er,-qnd the ship's surgconj rrho has le<t the v«cs«l at Wellington,' was Dr. a. liilroy. 'rhe Sussex is expected to complete discharging operations by to-morrow, -She waits at. Wellington until after the holidays, thence procoediv.s to Gisboruc. It is probable that the vessel will be docked in the. south. Yesterday the Government steamer Hinomoa was at Cape Maria van Diemcn. She leaves there .to-morrow, afternoon for Mongonui, where sho remains over Christmas.. '■ Telegraphic advice received from Greymouth yesterday, stated that there is a .heavy season .the bar. Consequently there, is no chance of the .Mapo.urika crossing inwards. Sho arrived at -Westport at 5 a.m. yesterday from Wellington,' via way ports.: \\ The Regulus calls at noon to-day from the Patent Slip for Nol&on. 1 • At 1.20 a.m. yesterday morning. the Kaitangata .left Westport for Melbourne. ' Last night the Himita-ngi returned from Wellington ..to tho*East Coast to pick up another load of wool. She is due back again to-morrow. .. Mr.* J. Ewing, engineer of the Defender, signed' off the vessel yesterday, his place being taken by . Mr.. S. C. Chamberlain. Ki\ J. Taft, sccor.d mate, also. left the vessel at Wellington.- " ' " " ; The Koonya left Timaru at 5.30.p.hi. yesterday for Wellington. She is due in t>ort this morning, and is rchc.duled to leave again for Akaroa to-mofrow. At the latter port the Koonya'will act as tender to the Maori during the excursion from Lytteiton to Akaroa on Tuesday next. : Quite a number of Union Company's cargo boats will - "tie up" at "Wellington until after tho holidays. Besides the Taviuui, there will be tho Koromiko, Kit-. tawa, Poherua, Kurow, and Kir.i. The two latter boat l ? are expected from Westport with coal to-morrow, : . " • A curious difficulty, due to tie immense length of the 'Olympic— B4o feet—has been pointed out' by. Mr. Frederick Dalziell, a tug-owner,/whose, boats handle a large proportion of tho liners that enter New York. Mr. Dalzell hac fust made a tour of the principal British' s ports, in' the course of j which he inspected ithe Olympic. After expressing hisJ admiration for. the .vessel, he pointed out that none of tho piers at New York exceed SCOft. "in length. The Olympic, therefore, when berthed, will project into the Hudson River.; '"This," he said, "will increase the risk 1 of navigation is the rivbr, and 4 as we are forbidden to extend our piers, we shall be forced to cxcavate into the-land. This will menr. the . purchase of .valuable blocks of riverside buildings in the near future." • The new rudder for the steamer atratftclyde, which is being made at- Port Chalmers by Messrs. Stevenson- and Cook, is practically completed, and will bo sent on to Lyttelton. to-morrow;. It is possible that the vessel will be Tc-docked to-day, and her new gudeons for the stern post will then be fitted. An ordsr for a- cargo 'steamer 1 , of 3CCO ton-?, which is intended.for the Tasmanian trade, has (sayr, a-Hobart exchange) been placed with Messrs; Tiaraage. aud ."Ferguson, shipbuilders, of- Leith, by./a New .Ze-a-. land'shipping Arm. Captain W. M'Bride, of the Talune, has relieved Captain E. G. Hutton, of the Navua, who comes ashore on holidar jea.u. Due at Onehunga this mdrnir.g/. the Corinna loads a large quantity of butter for transhipment to the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui at .Wellington, wnicii sails for Home on Thursday next. Late last night word was received from Dunedin "stating that the Union Company's new steamer Kowhi, recently purchased at Home, had arrived fram Liverpool, via 1 Cape Town. The principal'feature of thevessel is that, even when loaded to her' full capacity, she will be able to work ports that have little depth of water. At 5.30 p.m. yesterday the Anchor Line Oo.'s Waimea,- from Gisbornc» called at Wellington Heads : and- rcceivcd- orders to proceed lo Westport. What appeared to be a vessel making en«t'passed the-Heads at 9.55 last night. The weather was hazy at-, the time, and it was raining. Consequently, it was impossible to make her out.
