THE NEW LAW LECTURER,
The final meeting of tho Victoria College Council for tho year was hold last evening, Mr. H. I«\ Von Haast presiding. Thero woro also present:— Sir Robert Stout, Dr. C. P. Knight, tho llev. W. A. Evans, Messrs. T. U. Fleming, 11. M'Callum, C. Wilson, A. T. Magmmty, J. G. V/.. Aitken, J. Graham, A. Meek, H. H. Ostler, and JJ. IjcU.
The Officers' Training _ Corps .asked tliat a storo bo made in the- sciencc buiJdiug for tho storage of ammunition., fi i. , inanco omi iiitteo ' recommended that the request bo acceded to, tho ccst not to exceed £7 10s. Consideration of the matter was deferred, pending inQUii les as to the safety of the store, to be made by Mr. Bell. Tbo chairman of the Professorial Board suggested additions to tho calendar. The Finance Committee recommended that no additions bo made for the present year, and that the question raised by tho hoard bo further considered by the committee. Tho chairman said the committee had not had time to rovestigato the matter thoroughly, and the recommendation of tho Finance Committee was agreed to. A. letter was "received from the District- Court of Convocation forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at the meeting expressing regret that the Court is still not properly equipped with books and periodicals. Mr. Wilson, remarking on this resolution, took exception to certain remarks made by a solicitor recently in regard to the poor supply of text books. The professors, Mr. Wilson pointed out-, had had thq.choosing cf the books left to tflem ever since the college was started, and'the amount at .their disposal, was ample. This being so, ho suggested that the board bo asked to write to the complaining solicitor suggesting that -he should supply a list of. tho books ho considers necessary.
, ' Sir Robert- Stout did not think such a. course would be in-keeping with tho dignity of .tho council.
• The chairman said thS resolution had been, passed to strengthen the hands of. tile council in its effort- to got a subsidy from the Government to . inii prove the library. • The letter was received and ordered to lie on the table.
A recommendation was made by the Finance Committee that tho chairman be authorised to affix the seal of tho college to the agreement with Mr. Garrow, the new law lecturer. Tho agreement provides for a five years' engagement, .at £700 ■ a year, the contract, .to bo-terminated by twelv'o month's' riot-ice on either side. A special clauso provides that.'the lecturer sliall not receivo .any of tho,fees- paid by pupils, attending his classes, and- that lie shall'.not practiso his 'profession.. Considerable discussion took placo on a proviso in tho agreement to enable Mr: Grlrrow to charge'-for tho loan .of his books or digests for a term of two years, several speakers taking exception to this privilege being given in .this. case. when, it did not appty in other cases. The recommendation of the committee was agreed to by 9 to 4.
An application was received from Mr. Allen for tho extension of' his daughter's Queen's scholarship. Tho Financ'o Committee recommended that the scholarship bo extended; for one year. This was agreed to. Miss Watson was appointed assistant, to .Professor Mackcnzio. at a-iilary ;,of£loo a year. . ; j.
,Thc Finance Committee submitted, accounts amounting t0.'£794 4s. /M.';' which were passed for payriient. The credit balance after the above payments is £1025 7s. 3d.
