Mr. H. A. -Parker, the well-known tenuis player, and son of Mr. Robert Parker, of this city, arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. Parker will' be a competitor at the New Zealand championship tennis tournament to bo held at Blenheim next week. ■ Very general Regret will bo expressed at the news that' Colonel Knight, of the Salvation Army, has received marching orders for other parts. During the two and a half years that Colonel Knight has been in Wellington ho has won the respect of all with whom ho lias been brought into contact. It is probable that his next post of duty will bo Melbourne. Ho will remain at Wellington until about the end of January; Miss Julia Moran, a sister of Mr. S. J. Moran, solicitor, of Wellington, and a former resident of this city, arrived from Sydney yesterday by . the Mocraki- on a holiday visit to her friends and;relatives. Miss'Moran will be well remembered as an accomplished violinist. • - '
Dr. Kenneth M'Kenzie, son of the Hon. T. M'Kenzie, lias passed the examination for F.R.CiS. Dr. M'Kenzie has been appointed demonstrator of practical surgery and anatomy at the Edinburgh University.
Mr. F. W. Maclean, inspecting ' engineer for tl:o Railway Department, who lately underwent a serious operation, is how progressing very satisfactorily and hopes to be about in a few weeks' time. In the' meantime Mr. D., S. Macintosh, district engineer at Auckland, will act as inspecting engineer. The Hon. J. Carroll is at present the guest of Mr. G. P. Donnelly at Otatatara. ,- Mr. R. M'Nab is at present on a visit to Hastings. Mr. A. J. Newman, of the Thames School of Mines, lias been appointed instructor in engineering at the Napier Technical College.—Press Association. Mr. J. G. Harkness was at last night's meeting of the Harbour Board granted leave of absence from the meetings of the board from January to April, inclusive. Owing to important matters engaging his attention in Australia, the visit of' Commissioner Hay, of - the Salvation Army, to Ney Zealand lias been postponed for- the. time being. . ' Colonel Somervilie, who has been in very indifferent health for some time past, is, wo regret to hear, now lying dangerously ill at his residence near Wanganui. Mr. H.. Gibbons, the well-known Wanganui'- brewer, returned from a trip to England and the Continent yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Gibbons. At' a meeting of the North' Canterbury Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union' yesterday afternoon it was reported that D. Jones, formerly of Weedons and now of Taiwhare, Waikato, has accepted tho offer of the position of organiser for the Farmers'. Political Protection League. Mr. Paul Marcus, who has been chancellor to the Consul-General for France in Sydnoy for twelve years, has arrived in Auckland to ■ take . up. the duties'of Consul, vice M. Boeufve, who has been transferred to Liverpool.' Mr. Alex. M'Eldowney, late 'of Saigood, Son-and Ewen's staff, Wellington, returned froni a • trip to England yesterday. Mr. M'Eldowney has entered into his, brother, Mr. Jacob. M'Eldowney, and they ivill commence business in Wellington as warehousemen. . ..., ... ...

Mrs. Desmond, Wife "of Mr. William Desmond, the leading actor of Williamson's Dramatic Company, which arrived from Sydney yesterday, is a sister o| the well-known American actress, Miss Nance O'Neil, who has, toured New Zealand on two occasion's. Miss O'Neil is now one of David Belasco's admitted .."stars," having made a big impression in New York last season in a play entitled "The Lily," which is running " again this' season at the Stuyvesant Theatre on Broadway. Like her sister, Mrs. Desmond is tall and fair,.and she too has had considerable experience on the dramatic stage in America. Among the arrivals from Sydney yesterday by the Moeraki . was Mr. Lawrence Campbell, the talented elocutionist, and his wife, and M. Eugene Ossipoff, a Russian dramatic vocalist, who will assist Mr. Campbell at his recitals, Mr. J. Muir, of Wanganui, who was manager for the Wanganui Garrison Band during its' recent successful visit to Ballarat, returned •from Sydney yesterday by the Moeraki. He has completed arrangements to manage Madame Antonio Dolores' concerts throughout New: Zealand., .
