NEW RHODES SCHOLAR.
AUCKLANDER SELECTED. The Board of Selection to appoint the Rhodes Scholar for New Zealand for the coming year met yesterday afternoon. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) presided and there were also present: Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice), Mr. Justice Cooper, and Professors Kirk (Wellington), Thomas (Auckland), aiid Gabbatt (Canterbury). There were three candidates:
David Smith (Victoria College, Wellington).
Montague Ongley (Otaeo University). A. G. Marshall (Auckland' University College). Tile board deliberated close noon an hour and it is understood found great difficulty ia making.its selection. Eventually it wa.s decided that Mi. Marshall had the higher claims for, the position.. Mr. Marshall is 'the third Auckland student to »ain a Rhodes Scholarship. In 1908. Mr. Zimau, of. that" city, was successful. Then again Mr.. Sisara, also an Aucklander, secured the coveted honour last year. The, successful candidate' is a son of the R«v. Mr.. Marshall, formerly of-Puke-Irohe. Ho graduated B.A. in 1908, and M.A. with first-cldss honours in mathematics afld mathematical physics in 1909. At present he is assistant to the Professor of Mathematics at Canterbury-College. He has represented his university' with, credit both on athletic fields and in debating circles. . '
