THE W.A.A.C. CARNIVAL.

SOME COOD RACINC. CI'CLISTS FIRMLY DEALT AVITH.

The Wellington Amateur Athletic Club hejd its sports meeting at the Basin Rosefvo 011. Saturday under conditions- that .satisfactorily recompensed the club and spectators for their disappointment of tho previous week. The weather. was perfect, and about 2500 people assembled to view the sports. All things considered, tho fields that faced the starter, wero good. Wairarapa competitors, a number of whom had mado a bootlosfc' journey a week earlier, did not again put in an appearance, and events, iii which the St. Patrick's Collego boys were to have competed had be eliminated, as the college had broken, up during the week. Tho/majority. of tho.' programme 'events-, liowover,- attracted numerous entries. Events were, run off in good timej and the meeting concluded shortly after five o'clock. Woodger did not succeed in carrying off the'hundred yards, handicap, although he ran in splendid style. Ho finished .third in his heat, and fourth in the final, one yard in rear of the winner (M. P. Pool). - Woodger thus completed .his distance in just about the even time of toil seconds. 'The twomile bicycle handicap proved * fiasco. Six competitors who started rodo in a clump over the greater part of -the distance, at a leisurely pace, and sprinting only commenced in tho final lap; When tho" race fconcluded, the judge, Mr. W. H. Edwards,, disqualified tho riders, en bloc, "for loafing.": The announcement was received with applause. Evidently spectators approved-tho drastic action taken by the - judge. The serious business of the day was varied by a number of side-attrttctions. M'Kay. gave a capable exhibition of pole-vault-ing, clearing the bar at a height of ten feet. He almost bettered this by six inches,, but ■ struck the cross-bar with his shoulder in descending. Bissett's hammer throw of 107f,t. was good, considering that it was a maiden essay, so far as the flexible handled hammer is concerned. Highland dancing by a party of girls was a graceful performance, and .equally so was tho exhibition Irish, jig, -dancod by Miss Eileen Foley. A little fellow named F. Reid, four years of age, was tho' youngest competitor engaged. His speciality is the Highland Fling. The half-milo walk for boys -, was an event not without its amusing side. Boys- of all ages entered, and some of them in" their eagerness simply scurried,, and .were disqualified,' The winning 'boyy F. Sullivan, walked .in good.'style, and "another, capital per-, formahce w t as that of Hickliug, one; of tho shiallcs't" competitors in 'the race, who .finished thircl. ' As a whole, the club is to be congratulated on a highly successful meeting, the financial returns j from which should recoup with a margin its fruitless expenditure'on the .previous Saturday.
