An officer bet another a large sum of mon«y that he could not empty a quart bottle of champagne at ono draught. He asked for half-an-bour to think the matter over, which was granted. When he returned he took the champagne, drank it off, and claimed the money. Ho was asked■ why it took him so long to accept the bet. "Well," ho &aid, "I was not quite sure that I could do it, my dear fellow, so I went homo first and tried the experiment.".
