NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glencoe.]
Owners and trainers will have much to think of from to-day until .Thursday next, which is the cvo 'of the racing which takes place during the Christ-mas period. First of all acceptances for all events on the first- day of the Rangitikei meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock. To-morrow night before 10 o'clock final payments for the Mauawatu Cup must be made, and on Thursday at 9 p.m. acceptances for tho Wairarapa -meeting are due. Tho weights for this meeting will be found on this page. The whole of tho acceptors have made tho final payment for the Auckland Cup. Kopu still retains his position as favourite with Diabolo and Bridge in that order. Mr. XJlic Shannon will adjust- tiio weights for the second'day of the Taranaki meeting. Excellent acceptances have been received for tho whole of the events on tho first daj of tho A.R.C. meeting, and tho minor handicaps have filled- particularly well. It will bo noticcd that Lady Medallist has paid up in the Christmas Handicap. This will mean that she will not bo ail acceptor at Bulls..
As Outlander has been acoepted for in the principal event at Dunedin. it may safely be assumed that Mr. Grigg's horse will not be seen out at the Rangitikei meeting for which he was nominated. Though it was held in some .quarters that Cullinan (lOst. 31b.) was harshly dealt with in the Robinson Handicap at Ellerslie, Mr. T. H. Lowry's horse has been paid up for, and all going well in the interim, he is a sure starter. Though there is a strong field numerically in this race there is.nothing o! ■' any note engaged. ■ Penates is a certain starter in the Fifth Palmerston North Stakes, and will be ridden by W. Ryan. • Some Aucklanders are very confident as to the ability of the local horse 3 Sedition and Salute to win the double at Ellerslie, and there is very little money on offer about this combination. The whole of R. J. Mason's team, which left Yaldhurst, were taken rightthrough to Ellerslie. This will mean that Peirene will not be a starter in the - classic event at Awapuni. The Porirua light-weight, L. Traill, will have the mount on Dearest in the Palmerston Stakes, after which he will .proceed to Ellerslie to assist in the rid* ing of J. H. Prosser's team. H. Gray, who went to Plimpton- to : ride Lady Reina' on Friday, returned north on the same night, and went through to Ellerslie by the express on, . Saturday. While at .the C.R.C. meeting he increased his winning total by steering Crown Derby to victory. ;in the» Maiden race. J. Franks, private tiainer to Messrs.. Stead' Brothers, was a passenger by the Monowai, which passed throughWellington, bound for Auckland, on. Saturday. He had with hi™ the race-.-horses Culprit and Orton. The latter is in Jus charge' while on the boai, as R. J. Mason had only been able t-o' s&-. cure accommodation for four horses on; : the Main Trunk express.. Crown Derby, who scored his -first success at- Plumpton, is to be turned . out for an extended spell. When next - ho figures on the race-card it will bet. as a gelding. Advocate has gone • right out; of favour for. the Auckland Cup, and nou" ranks as one of the horses' with lu» chance of winning. : Since arriving home from Biccarton, Hohungatahi seems to have come back to his best form, and is now galloping in an. attractive manner. So far no rider has been engaged for him, and ' considerable difficulty has been experienced in getting one who could doi t-lio weight. Probably J. Conquest-, whot can generally get down to about'7sWwill have the mount. Speybank, who is amongst thoseweighted for the Dunedin Handicap -at ■ Wingatui, is one of the Invercargill trainer, P. Hogan's team, and is- by , ; the cx-Chokebore sire Signalman. This > youngster was purchased at the sale of ■ Mr. S. H. Gollan's yearlings last year. At the present time Turbine occupies [ quite a false position in the market , for the Railway Handicap, and, though he has been clearing all before him on the Auckland courses, it should be • borne in mind that, so far, he has met ' nothing like the quality, that he will en- • counter in the big sprint event at El- ; lerslie on December 26. The Menschikoff gelding can certainly go very fast over four furlongs, but in the event. in question-he will have to keep up the same pace for an extra, two furlongs. What the writer - has seen .of . him is enough to cause doubt as to his , ability-to do so. As one prominent ! authority put it, "He will not be- seen at the finish."- ; RACING FIXTURES. • ' Dec. 23, 26, and 27—Hanawatu E.G. Summer. ' Dec. 26 and 27—Dunedin J.C.
