HEART SEIZURE WHILE BATHING. WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT DIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Creymouth, December 13. A sad fatality occurred on -Saturday afternoon, when Mr. Anderson, manager of tlio abattoirs, went for a bathe in the two companions. Ho was wading in about throe or four feet of water, wben ho cried out to . his companions, who were somo distance ataay. Before they could reach him he gavo another cry and disappeared. Ho was quickly brought to the, surface, but life was extinct. On the doctor's arrival it was found that death was due to heart failure; The deceased leaves a widow and two children. The sad affair cast quite a gloom over the town, as Mr. Anderson ..was • well and favourably known. OLD WOMAN'S TRAGIC DEATH. DAUGHTER'S EFFORT TO'SAYE. ' HER. ' Christchurch, December 17. At the inquest touching the death of Emma Staples, 86 years of age, who was burned to death in 'a. fire at Linwood on Friday night, Elizabeth Staples, daughter of deceased, stated that she and her mother lived alone together. On the evening of tho fire, as sho was holding a lamp reading to her mother, tho bed curtains caught alight. Sho tried to extinguish them, but could not, and was burnt iu the attempt. }jShe then tried' to save her mother, but failed. It was in fact quite impossible, aiid she (witness) was taken' out of the house. Her mother could not speak. ' . H. C. Jones, who gave the alarm, stated that ho entered the house at tlie back, but could get no further than the door of deceased's bedroom owing to tho siuoko and flames. -The fire was in tho two front rooms and tho passage, and there was not a soul about when ho . went into the louse. Deceased bad been bedridden for sixteen years. ; Sho was inclined to be deaf, and was paralysed. The Coroner recorded a ' verdict that deceased' accidentally was' burned to death. ,

CREAM STEAMER MYSTERY. ENGINEER LOSES HIS LIFE. : Dargaville, • December 17. At ".tie .inquiry held. on tie body of Arthur Henry Lewis, late engineer of the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company's cream steamer Pioneer, evidence was given to the effect that deceased worked very long hours, usually from 5.30 a.m. to 5 or 6.30 p.m., and, sometimes, ;when'.tho engfnes: were giving trouble, he 1 , commenced at 3.30 a.m!"'

Dr. .Young gave evidence : arid it was stated that deceased had been buried without a post mortem examination having been made. In cross-examina-tion by Mr. R. J:' Coates, who represented the Norwich TJmon Accident Insurance Company, the doctor stated that he had only made a superficial examination. ' There was a contused spot over tho eye, and there might have been, a' fracture of tho. skull caused by the propeller, but he could not teil without a.post mortem. ■ Tho Coroner explained' that there must liavo been a misunderstanding. When he gave directions over the telephone that ah examination should be made he meant' a post mortem. Constablo M'Donnell said that the Coroner only ordered an examination of the body, and that was done. \ After considerable evidence liqd been given the Coroner (Mr. Webb) returned a verdict that deceased met his death by drowning, there being 110 evidence;,.to show how he. came into the water.

BODY FLOATING IN THE SEA. Christchurch, December 18. Constable Rowe, of New Brighton, was informed this morning that a body had been seen floating in the sea at North New Brighton. He has gono to search, but the result is liot known yet. .It is supposed that.the body may bo 'thjit: of Mr... Lawrence; who went over,board from the steamer Maori on Thursday; morning,.though it is thought that it is tod oarly for his body to be washed ashore. VICTIM OP. TRAM ACCIDENT DEAD. Christcihurch, December 18. Lester Green, 52_ years of age, a plasterer, of New Brighton, who, on the evening of December 12 was injured ",by colliding with a ■ tramcar, died at tho Hospital this morning, as result of his injuries; The deceased was thrown off his bicycle on to the fender of the car, and had ono rib fractured, and also received a,slight depression of tho skull.

SUDDEN DEATH. / On' Friday evening, Mrs. Ellen Moore, wife of Mr. Frederick Moore, commission agent, died suddenly at her residence, No. 2 Ohilka Street, Berhampore. Mr. Moore retired about midnight, and his wife followed shortly afterwards. The husband was awakened during the . night by a choking sound. He became alarmed at the expression of the face, and summoned Dr. Bowerbank, .and restoratives: were applied, but life proved to be extinct. An inquest was held by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., City Coroner, on Saturday morning. Evidence was given to the effect that deceased, though feeling well on Friday, had, lately, been subject to attacks of indisposition, but had not considered her condition serious enough to consult a medical man. The medical evidence was .that deceased suffered from fatty defeneration of the heart. A verdict of death caused by failure of the heart was ; returned. Thomas Hoare, a farmer,-was found dead in a paddock at Springlands on Friday morning., Tlie'causfe of death •is unknown. Sydney Cleridgc, ,a labourer, was admitted to. the hospital on Saturday, suffering from; rather severe, injuries to his face, caused by splashes of' a corrosive acid. James Cavanagh, a . married man, residing at 27 Grant Road, was knocked down on Saturday afternoon by a motor-car in Grant Road, and received a sovore shaking, but fortunately escaped without mora serious hurts. A man named Christopher Easier, brother of Mrs. 118 Cuba Street,. was accidentally killed on the s.s. Pukaki at Timaru on Saturday evening.
