SMOKE CONCERT AT DAY'S BAY
■ A PIONEER HONOURED. A very pleasant' -time was spent last Thursday- evening at M'Guire's Hall, Day's Bay, . when a smoke concert was given in. honour of Mr. Hugh Downs, who. is retiring from the AVellingt'ou Harbour Ferries, with whom lie has served for somo twenty odd years; Mr. H. Downs is the founder, and also one of the. oldest, inhabitants of Day's Bay; he being the. first white mail to make his home there. • Ho also supervised the clearing and allotting of the' land, and, in fact, he has practically made the bay of the present time. The concert was given by local residents, and toasts and speeches were made in 'Mr. Downs's honour by Mr. Ratcliffe, Constablo Simpson, Mr. Jawest, Captain Williams, and Mr. Pringle, of : tho. "Cobar." Recitations were contributed by: .Messrs; Jones, Girdleson,, and ..Ke'enaii;' and songs by Miv Grant and .Mr. Pringle. Tho function broke up at 3 a.m. after a very enjoyable evening; 1
