CARNIVAL DATES. .Tanuary- M —Thorndon Club r . January 28-Swifts Olub (ladies I '-branch), February 2o—Y.M.C.A. Club. March 11—Victoria College Club, v March 25—Wellington Club. April B—Swifts CluK . Water polo dates December 17, Wellington r.- Thorndon;, December 20, Wellington yV'YiM.C.A.V.
The New Zealand Council lias granted the IJew Zealand charopioDsliips to Wellington and the local Centre, at a meet- • ing held, last Tuesday night, decided to hold the meeting on-February 4, 8, and 11. As the Centre is not very strong financially, it would be a liappy . idea if an.Ovening meeting could be held on January 18. By getting the ciubs to take tho matter~ilp 'a"very~ successful carnival would no doubt eventuate, and tho proceeds would greatly assist tho championship meeting. ■' , ' '
Owing to tho New Zealand championship meeting being "held here, the Centro has had to re-draw tho Carnival dates for the local olub. fixtures, but it has.not ro- ' allotted-the various provincial championships as it-should havo'done.-. The Wellington Club, which was to have held its carnival,on,, February 11, was allotted the 100 yds. championship, and tlie Swifts Club, .which, Was' to ' have hold its carnival oii JanuarV. 23, .was allotted the Flying Squadron Race for' tlie '"Walker' and Hall Cup. The Wellington Club will now hold its carnival on. March 25, and the Swifts Club on April B.'. NoiV both these dates are quite unsuitable for races of such importance. It would "bs better if the 100 yds. championship were' granted -to the Thorn'don Club and the Plying Squadron 'Race to the,.' Swifts ' Club - ladies' branch. By allowing the Thorndon Club tho 100 yds. championship, the Centre would lie; enabled to select-the'local representatives form at .least the'looyds. and 220 yds. New Zealand championships. Some time tack the, centro passed a motion to tho .effect that, all water polo matches were to be'played on Saturday afternoons, and; subsequently, set up a sub-committee to draw up matches, etc. Tliis committee, however, has not abided by the motion, as the Y.M.C.A. Club's team is drawn to play its matches on days other tlmn Saturday. Tho reason ■men for the change-is that tho Y.M.C.A. Club cannot enter a team if the Saturday arrangement is held to. '■■■ Perhaps it would'be wiso. for the. Centra to rescind its 'motion, as - this season -will bo tho busiest 'one which -Wellington has ever had,'and most of tlie Saturdays aiter the. New Year will be given over to carnivals. Since the departure of Mr. Henry, matters in connection with tho Royal Life-Saving Society awards have been rather cyuet: .The Swifts Club, which was apparently hibernating. at tho time of the examinations, now-has a class of about twenty, members, under the august eye of I). C. Freyberg. I think, however. that. I am correct in stating that Swifts ,is the only club with a class at present. The Wellington Club has announced its programme for the season, and it is without doubt the best programme ever submitted to local swimmers. This club has tho largest membership of tho local clubs, and, to successfully carry out tho published programme, it behoves tho members of tho committee to get to work, and not leave everything .to the club captain and the treasurer, as is now the case. These two officials are alre'ady very hard-worked. The Swifts Club is working quietly, but does not appear to be taking the prominent part in local swimming circles that it has occupied in . past. yea*ons. They hold their opening race (50yds.) oa December S, anil the results - have already appeared. Seeing that the New Zealand Championships ftro to be held here, it would bo a good thing if tho Centro would sea that the turning boards at To Aro Baths are scraped. At low tido it is impossible to turn properly, owing to their gMasv surface. A new piece of matting should also be nrovided for tho diving-board next to the sea-wall. At the Rushcultcrs Bay Baths fSydney) on Monday evening, December 5, champion Cecil Healy created a n»w Australian record for 150 yards, by cutting out the distance in lmin. 3f?ee. C. .M. Daniels, of America, holds the world's record for the distance (lmin. 32 d-ssec.), having achieved it at Manchester, England.' Daniels, who is a superb turner, made his record in a 25-yards bath, while Hqaly put up his record in a 50yards, enclosure.
