The.annual report for the twelve months' .ended March 31 last of the British. Post Office affords, on its-financial side v food for reflection. A -profit of £4,908.725 was made on postal business. The postal revenue ' reached the enoroioua total of £18,708,563, an increase of £582,959 on that of the previous year, and the postal expenditure amounted, to £13,799,839, which wa5'£412,642 more - than tho previous twelve months' record.. Tho telegraph revenue, including tlio value of services rendered to other departments, was £3,166,192, an increase of £67,740, :and . the expenditure in that branch, including tho interest on the capital—£lo,B67,446r-expended on tho purchase of tho telegraphs, was £4,182,559, an increase, of £37,350 upon tho figures for the previous year. The net deficit was thus £1.016,367. or £30,390 .less than, last year. The telephone revenue represented £4.711,967, an increase-of £163,012, and tho telephone expenditure;- after, -making provision for the annuity, payments in repayment of tho capital expenditure, wa3 £1,783.940, an increase of £208,945 upon the previous year. Tho net deficit was thus £25,933 more than last year. The net'revenue from tho pc6tal, telegraph, and telephone services . combined was £3,820,385, or £174,804 more than last year. These figures arc, neccssaTilv, partly estimated. Among other particulars /given in the report it is mentioned that' there were 10,104,900 money orders issued. representing a sum of £39,508,500; postal orders numbered 125,855.000, representing an amount of £43,106,000. the increa&o being 5.5.per cent, in number and 4.1 per cent, in, value; the number of active accounts in the Post Office Savings Bank was 7,913,300 at the close of the year, the amount to the ercdit of the depositors being £164,and the interest credited, to these was £3,868,000. . 1

The annual general meeting of . members of the United 'Building Society of ;Wellington was held at the Chamber, of Corimorce last nipht. twenty members attending. Mr. Herbert, Rawson, chairman of directors, presided. The directors' report for the year ended .October 51. 1910. has already, been .published in THE DOMINION.
The chairman explained, in reply to a question, that there, had been 68 with- % drawals from the membership of. the First Fund during tho year, involving payments or £3661 15s. '3d. The effect of this was to reduce the number of ballots and isalus by ,two-or three during the year. Wit> drawing members received back what they had paid in minus Is. a. share for expenses. 1 Tho . report and balance-shcet were adopted. v 1 Messrs. John -. Scott and 'Arthur- Young, the retiring directors, wero re-elected without opposition.

Aoldcrs' auditor.- It was decided to continue the auditors' temuneration at 15 guineas for tho year. An appropriation of £ICOO in the First Fund was then offered for sale, and knocked down to Mr. John Castle' at £17. On behalf of * a member who drew an appropriation of £800 last August, this was offered'in two parts of £3CO and £500. Both were bought by Mr.' F. W. Faber, for £10 and £15 respectively.
0.. AND S. BUILDING "SOCIETY. The balancc-sbcet of the City and Suburban 00-operativo Building Society of Yfellington for the year ended November 30 has been circulated. The directors in tlieir report dealing with the first issue state that the profit aud loss account shows a profit of £14 17s. 6d. There still remain's to be completed one loan of £5-l which was sold by tenaer at £10 per £ICO, and the. society will therefore profit to •the extent of £50. The subscriptions in arrear-total £238 16s. The operations of the second issue resulted in a loss of £55 10s fid. This is attributed to the fact that owinp to tho large number, of members withdrawing from the society only one appropriation by lender was held durinc the year. A tliird issue has just been successfully launched.
Customs revenue collcctsd at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £1997 3s. 6d.
