WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH.
UPSETTING OF A LAMP.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)' Christchurch, December 16. A fire occurred to-night at tho residence of J. Staples, Jlatheson's Road, Limvood. Mrs. -Staples, who has been bedridden for Several years, was burned to death. When the fire brigade arrived on the scene the front bedroom in which, was Mrs, Staples!. was burning fiercely,-and. tllero' was no hope of rescuing tho occupant. The only other person in the house was Miss Staples, who attempted to save her 'mother and was'severely burned about tho arms. Mrs. Staples was reading by the light of a lamp, which got upset, set fire to a curtain, aud spread to the bedding.

At an inquest held to-night concern-ing-thc death of Jane Vcrcoe, boardinghousekeeper, who died suddenly on Thursday night, a, verdict ..was returned in accoraance with-the evidence,which was that deaths-was. 'due to ccrcbral hemorrhage at the base of the brain, probably caused by excitement.
