It is probable that the Hon. James Carroll will spend Christmas at Gisborno. l%is arrangement is contingent on. his being relieved by another Minister.

'At''the'Public'Trust OSice yesterday afternoon occasion was taken by the staff, from the Public Trustee (Mr. J. W. Poynton) downwards, to sayfarewoll to" Mr. Peter Hervey, who is retiring from the service on pension after seventeen years' connection with the Trust Office, in which he has been in charge of the intestate branch. At yesterday afternoon's function, which was held in'the main office, those present included tho Minister, for the Department (the Hon. Jas. Carroll), the Public Trustee (Mr. Poynton), and the DeputyPublic Trustee (Air. A. A. K. Duncan). In making the presentation (which consisted of a piirso of sovereigns), 1 Mr. Carroll remarked on Mr. Hervey's long connection with the Department,- and tho able manner in which he had administered the affairs of the intestate branch. Mr. Poynton endorsed- the Minister's remarks as to Mr. Hervey's official capacity, and added that by his geniality and happy disposition, Mr. Hervey had been largely instrumental in creating a feeling of good fellowship among the staff, winch was an excellent thing for tho service. Mr. Duncan also spoke. A suitable reply was made by the recipient, who thanked the staff for their handsome presentation and good wishes. At tho conclusion of the function the senior officers of the Department, with the Hon. J. Carroll, adjourned to tho Civil Service Club, v.'here Mr. T. S. Ronaldson (who remarked that ho was now the oldest servant of tho Department) proposed the health of Mr. Hervey, and congratulated him heartily on "getting out of it." Mr. Hervey, after responding briefly, proposed tho health of the Hon. J. Carroll, which was drunk with musical honours.

Mr. Doust, tho crack Australian tennis player, writes to, a friend in Wellington that owing to tho details in connection with tne proposed visit of an Australian'team to the New Zealand championship tournament having to bo arranged by the Australian and New Zealand Associations, and the consequent loss of time, it is improbable that any of the Australian players will make the trip'. Mr. H. A. Parker, formerly of Wellington, and now of Sydney, ' will, however, attend the championship meeting to be held at Blenheim on December 26, 27, and 28.

Mr. Charles Berkeley, advance representative for the new Comic Opera Company, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning. Tho company is to open hero in "The Dollar Princess" on Boxing Night (December 26).

Mr. V. Cach'emaillo, of tho Harbour Board's clerical staff, who has been on a trip to England, is due back on Wednesday next-.

The Nelson Education Board has appointed Mr. F. C. J. Cockburn, of tlio Auckland Technical College, to the position of art instructor at tho Nelson Technical School. There were fourteen applications from various parts of tho Dominion.—Press Association.

Mr. Ernest Clark,'linotype engineer on tho staff of The Dominion", was the recipient of a presentation from his fellow-workers last evening, on tlio occasion of his .leaving the establishment. The presentation, which took the form of a handsome and useful oak fold-up writing desk, fully . furnished with stationery, was 'made by tho head printer, Mr. W. W. Todd, who voiced the regret of the staff at Mr. Clark's departure. The recipient responded in suitable terms-.
