. NOW RETIRING. , , (By Telegraph—Press Association.) m • ' -Dunedin, December 15. The Otago Education Board hasgranted ex-Chief Inspector Goyen twelve months' leave, and has appointed Mr. C. R. Richardson chief inspector. . Mr. S.' M. Park has been appointed permanent secretary, vice Mr. P. G. Pryde. An additional inspector is to bo appointed at a salary of .£350 per annum, plus travellins allowance. [Mr.'Peter Goyen,'F.L.S., lately Chief Inspector of Schools for Otago, has long been regarded as one of the foremost educational authorities in tho Dominion. He is also well known as a distinguished authority on certain' branches of natural science. In the matter of original research it may be mentioned that, after many years of patient study, he has been able to say the last word on the spiders of the Southern Hemisphere, having carTied that branch of research many steps further forward than it was before ho took it up. Mr. Goyen was born at St. Austell, Cornwall, and educated at Melbourne Training College. He was for some, time a teacher in Australia, but was appointed inspector of the Southland district in 1878, and in Otagq in 18S8. Ho has published numerous educational works, and. his school manuals on arithmetic and literature havo had a great effect on primary school work and methods.]
