PROMPT RESIGNATION.
% COUNCILLOR AND A .TENDER. - . The Devonport-Borough Council lost a useful member with great dispatch at its meeting on Tuesday night (says the Auckland "Herald") by. the, resignation of Mr. J. Mays. The council recently Called for tenders for thfr construction ui' a. new reservoir at Mount Victoria, and. tho firm of- Mays and. Gordon suddenly decided ,to tender, for tho work. Only one. other .- tender for put'in, and that of Messrs. Mays "ind Gordon was somewhat tho lower. As members of local bodies may not be financially interested in important works being carried out .by or for such . bodies, it became necessary for Mr., Mays, as »■ member of tho iirm, to resign his seat and he passed his resignation over the table on the . spot.' The council was apparently • a.-littl© .torn between, its - liking for, Mr; Mays as a councillor and its good wishes for his business,; and ono councillor -suggested that for the sake'of the £39 4s. Bd. the council might as well keep him arid accept. the other tender. The resignation was ■ accepted' ' with regret, and a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Mays' for his past services was passed.
