WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.
ATTITUDE OF CITY COUNCIL. The City Council last evening fixed Wednesday, January 25, 1911, as the date of the next conference to fix the "weekly half-holiday in Wellington. Four delegates to the conference were, required, and Councillors Morrali, Fitzgerald, Cohen, Fletcher, Trevor, Thompson, and M'Laion, were nominated. On a vote being taken, Councillors Trevor, Thompson, Frost, and Cohen were elected. Councillor Fletcher • moved that the council approve the Saturday half-holi-day, but the Mayor ruled tlio motion out of order, stating that, power to fix the half-holiday was vested in the conference of delegates, and notice must bo given of such a motion as Councillor Fletcher had proposed. Councillor Frost said it would be as well, if delegates stated their views to the council, but to this also the Mayor objected; ' Councillor Fletcher said he did not know if tho council would have an opportunity of 'hearing the views of delegates as to'the half-holiday. It would, perhaps, have been'as well' ii delegates had stated before hand for'what day they intended to vote. He would move that the council instruct its delegates to support tho Saturday half-holiday. It was tlie natural half-holiday, and had proved satisfactory in the big towns of Australia. Wellington might very welt load the way in New Zealand. Councillor Luke opposed the proposal. It would be time enough to take the action suggested when Parliament had moved in the matter. Councillor Fitzgerald also opposed the motion., The city, he said, .had not recreation grounds sufficient to accommodate the whole' population,. on a single half-holiday. Councillors Trevor and Cohen also supported the opposition view. The motion was defeated on a division by . ten votes to four. Tho division list was as follows:—Noes, the Mayor, aiid Councillors Atkinson, Barber, Carmichael, Cohen, Fitzgerald, Frost, Lnke, Shirtcliffe. and Trevor. Ayes, Councillors Fletcher, JPLaren, Morrah, and Thompson. On the motion of . the Mayor it was agreed that'it-bo an instruction to the delegates to'support the Wednesday liali'holiday.
