SUMMER FLOWERS.

AT THE TOWN HALL. KOSE AND' CAKNATION SHOW. Tho summer show of the Wellington Rose and Carnation Club was opeued at tho Town Hall yesterday by.his Excellency the Governor. There was a large attendance of the public while tho opening ceremony was in progress, and tho number of spectators increased as tho afternoon wore on. Tho Governor was accompanied by Lady Islington and suite. Lord Islington, y.lio was introduced by Mr. C. W. Tringham (president of tho club), prefaced a brief address by the statement that'lie had no idea of criticising the display before him, or of giving hints. He' was a keen gardener, and very fond;of horticulture. "I hope," added his Excellency, "that during tho time I have the honour to be Governor of this Dominion on opportunity will be afforded me of establishing, in the grounds of Government, House, something in the nature.of what may.appear, in years to come, an attractive garden." Amid the profusion of beautiful flowers, sweet peas were prominent. Every shade of colour was represented, some of the prettiest blooms being of apricot tint. Other attractive flowers ranged from light pink to deep red, almost purple. Carnations, too, wero well represented, and roses were shown in rich variety, but many of the blooms had suffered in tho changeable weather' that has ruled of late. Tho miscellaneous section included .a beautiful array of greenery. Splendid specimens were shown by Miss E. D. Duncan of tho Caladium (arrowroot plant), .asparagus, and maiden-hair-fern.

-Apart from blooms entered for competition, honorary and trade exhibits were entered by Messrs. T. Waugh (Lower Hutt), CV Trcvethick (Lower. Hutt), G. C. Holder, Hortons, Ltd. (Napier), 11. Brett (Auckland), 'Thos. Ilortoii (Taita), and IV Cooper (Wellington). Tho judges wore Messrs. Cooper and Goodson (sweet peas), Mr. Couzens, Dunedin (carnations and general), and Mis 3 Murray (ladies'_ classes). Owing to tho brief space of time available for arranging the exhibits, tho judging was not completed until some hours after the show had opened, but the secretary, Mr. W. G. Talbot, proved himself nn efficient ] organiser, aud tho exhibition vns 'in all respects an unqualified success. PRIZE LIST. Swcot Peas, Opon Section. Twelve varieties.—G. 0. Holder, i; 0. C.
